Interior Decorators, Designers, and YOU

Why You Might Want to Decorate Yourself

What is an interior decorator?

Anyone with a dream and love for interior design can become an interior decorator. No special education or experience is needed to open an interior decorating business. Many interior decorators help home owners and businesses select furnishings, accessories, and improvements.

What is an interior designer?

In some states, you must pass stringent course work and exams to become a certified interior designer. Strict requirements include two to five years of post-secondary education in interior design and internships.

Often, hiring an interior designer doesn't cost extra money for home owners. In fact, some interior designers save you money. They can take you shopping for furnishings and building materials where designers get a discount. Some designers who receive a thirty to fifty percent discount pass along a percentage of the savings to their clients. For instance, a designer buys furnishings at fifty percent off retail and charges eighty percent of retail. The client saves twenty percent and the designer profits thirty percent for their services.

However, these shopping excursions often include high-end designer showrooms. If you're on a limited budget, you may need to consider being you own home decorator. Another consideration, even if you have unlimited credit cards available, should you use your money on home improvements?

Research on happiness proves that people who have no financial worries are happier than those people deep in debt. Think about your financial situation. If you need to charge up your credit cards for new furnishings, is that the best use of your money? Perhaps a simple redesign of your home would best make you happy.

Research on happiness also proves that planning makes people happy. The actual planning of your home design gives many home owners pleasure.

Benefits of "Do it Yourself" Home Interior Design

  1. Enjoy the planning phase yourself.
  2. Enjoy the satisfaction of daydreaming about your rooms and desired interior decorating changes.
  3. Save money on supplies and furnishings.
  4. Enjoy shopping for the perfect, one-of-a-kind treasure.
  5. Reap the rewards of a "job well-done."

What Is Redesign?

Instead of starting with a blank room, you can take what you already have and reuse your furnishings and accessories in new ways. Redesign includes furniture rearrangement, new paint finishes, and upgrades like new lighting or flooring.

How does Design Psychology Differ from Traditional Interior Design?

Design Psychology starts with the use of a space and selects interior design details for emotional support. Rooms designed with Design Psychology methods don't always look grand in photographs because the rooms are designed for people, not appearance for a magazine spread. In other words, the rooms look great with people in the spaces and a little plain without life.

You can learn how to redesign your home with Design Psychology principles yourself. Make your home a haven for your emotional needs, without spending a fortune.
